Pub history
The Cross Inn
For over 200 years, this grade II listed building has been at the corner of High Street and Moss Grove. Marked on the 1750 parish map as ‘The Cross’ – whether it’s the crossroads by the pub or the inn’s name is unclear. In 1822, it belonged to Diana Briscoe of nearby Summerhill House, a fine villa built in the 18th century for the town’s glassmakers/ironmasters. For the next 50 years, The Cross is mentioned in local newspapers and was recorded by that name in the 1881 census.
