A new hotel at The Mile Castle (Newcastle upon Tyne) is now open, following an extensive £2.8-million redevelopment project.

The hotel has been constructed within the grade II listed property originally built by W Gibson and formerly Gibbs Chambers in 1861, adjoining the existing pub in Westgate Road and Grainger Street.

The Mile Castle hotel has 26 bedrooms, 19 of which can accommodate twin occupancy (including four family rooms and two accessible rooms), with seven double rooms also available.

Occupying four floors (lower ground, ground, first and second floors), the hotel has two rooms designed specifically for guests needing accessible facilities.

Each of the rooms features an en suite bathroom, tea- and coffee-making facilities, hair dryer, flat-screen television with Freeview TV and unlimited free Wi-Fi, as well as digital air-conditioning and temperature control.

A new beer garden (more than 275m2) is also opening on Tuesday 26 November on the site of a former car park at the side of the building.

The hotel and beer garden’s opening follows the pub’s reopening (in September 2024) after undergoing redevelopment and refurbishment work.

The overall cost of redeveloping the pub, hotel and beer garden, as well as refurbishment to the pub, was over £5 million.

In addition, 70 new jobs have been created, taking the pub and hotel’s staff number to 200.

Pub manager Kris Lee said: “We are looking forward to welcoming people to the hotel and believe that it will be a great asset to the pub, as well as to the city.

“The new beer garden will also be a great new attraction for the pub – and I am sure that it will be welcomed by customers.”
