Pub history
This former bookseller and stationer’s store partially covers the site of two earlier buildings. On the left side (as you face the pub) was Curtis, the corn merchant, a three-storey property which dominated High Street until was it demolished in the 1960s. Baker and Sons chemist’s shop was on the right-hand side. Established by Thomas Baker, in the 1840s, it was also the town’s first post office. Baker was the postmaster until the 1890s.
