Pub history

This grand building first opened its doors on 14 December 1908 as the Grand Theatre and Hippodrome, with seating for nearly 2,000. In 1923, it was converted to show films. Renamed the New Hippodrome in the late 1930s, it became the Odeon in 1956 – then the Classic in 1967 and the Cannon in 1985, closing in 1989. The building is now named after the fine operatic tenor born in Leigh in 1890.
